BOB's your best friend!

BOB (Box of Broadcasts) is an incredibly useful resource that allows you to watch, record and archive TV and radio programmes from over fifty freeview television and radio channels. BoB is available to all University staff, researchers and students. It is available on or off campus but is not available outside the United Kingdom.

Searching and viewing: You can search for programmes which other users have recorded or see other peoples clips and playlists. Your search results will be displayed as a list of programmes. To view, click on the programme thumbnail and click on the on screen 'click to play' option.
Recording: There are two ways to find a TV or radio programme to record - you can either perform a search for a keyword or programme title in the search box, or look through a 7 day programme guide to find the programme you want. Users are limited to 3 programmes requests per day.
Creating playlists and clips: Playlists can be used to collect and manage a number of related programmes. They might be related by title (all belong to the same series), or by topic (Politics etc). Clips can be created from longer programmes for lectures or tutorials.
MyBob: Is your user account area where you can access and manage your recordings.

How can you access this? You simply need a computer with a broadband connection and an ATHENS account, and you can find out about that here. You can find out more about BOB here. Try putting the word "counselling" into BOB's search box, or "psychotherapy", and see what you find. Clearly this is an academic resource but from looking at the most highly rated playlists that's not all people are using it for - unless an awful lot of them are doing research on The Wire, Blade and NHRA Drag Racing!

Supervisor Sought

Sesame Counselling Service, a charity donation counselling service that serves Newport and surrounding areas, is seeking a Supervisor to join our team supervising our volunteer counsellors, who work with a wide range of presenting issues, mainly at the level of Primary Care need.

As a Sesame Supervisor, you will be an experienced counsellor (preferably (but not necessarily) accredited by a recognised awarding body e.g. BACP, UKCP or BPS) and have a minimum of one year's one-to-one supervisory experience. This will have given you familiarity of supervising the major models of counselling and psychotherapy namely, Person Centred, CBT and Psychodynamic.

Placement Opportunity

There's a placement opportunity at the Sesame Counselling Service that you might well find worth exploring. Sesame is a charitable donation based counselling service that serves the Newport community. It operates on a Tuesday evening only between 6pm and 9pm and doesn't specialise in a particular client group so you would have the opportunity to work with a wide range of presenting issues - something that's particularly helpful at the start of a counselling career. All of the staff at Sesame are volunteers and the agency provides insurance and free monthly supervision. Sesame holds regular training days (quarterly) for its staff which are free. Cardiff BAPCA Workshop & Meeting

Cardiff BAPCA (British Association for Person Centred Counselling)

Meets regularly for 2 - 3 hours every couple of months.
Next meeting is 10.30am-12.30pm / Saturday 21st November ‘09
The group explores person centred and experiential approaches.
The above group has been in existence for 18 months.

In the past they have offered workshops on

*         ‘Supervision’
Attendance at these meetings count towards BACP CPD hours.

Relationships and the Only Child

If you are an only child, or you live with one or work with one then you may well find this workshop interesting. The venue is in Little Venice, near to Paddington Station, London W2 – accessible by train, tube, bus and with free car parking on a Saturday. The day will start at 9.30 and finish at 5pm. There are places nearby to eat at lunch time but tea and coffee are provided. You'll find further details with this posting.

BACP Member Consultation

BACP is holding a consultation meeting in Cardiff on 2nd November. If you're a member it would be worth going - particularly at a time when regulation is preoccupying so many of us. If you're not a member it'd be worth thinking about joining. They are our professional body, they do accredit the course and they offer reduced student rates!

Coordinator needed for Sesame

Sesame, a charitable donation based counselling service in Newport is currently looking for a volunteer coordinator to work with the team. Traditionally, coordinators have gone on - subject to appropriate qualifications and interview - to switch roles and work as counsellors. If you want to know more you'll find details in the enclosed attachment.

If I'm not mistaken members of the Newport counselling team were involved in setting up Sesame something like fifteen years ago. (Don't tell me it was even longer ago than that.) It's a well established agency and could well be worth following up.
