Hi All,

There have been a few amendments to the Tutor Surgery timetable so please find attached the latest version.

The school's TELLS team are running drop in workshops for all staff and students within the School of Health & Social Sciences.

So if you are struggling with any aspect of IT then feel free to pop in - if you have a laptop then bring that in too & we can help & support you using your own computer.

Don't worry if you can't bring your own computer in, we have a room full of them where we hold the workshop.

When: Workshops run every Wednesday in term time between 13:00 - 16:00

Where: Room E28 in the Rathmell building on the Caerleon Campus.

You can learn more about the TELLS team & how we can help you by visiting the site below:

The first in this year's series of Social Ethics seminars is on Wednesday 14 October, at 5.30pm - details below.  As usual, the session includes a talk, followed by the opportunity for discussion.  Refreshments will be provided.

Dr Simon Thompson (University of the West of England)

'What's Wrong with Religious Hatred?'

In 2006, the UK Government passed the Racial and Religious Hatred Act, which made it an offence to use threatening words or behaviour intentionally to stir up hatred against a group of people defined by their racial identity or religious beliefs.  Critics of this Act focused primarily on the threat they believed it posed to freedom of expression.  Its defenders, by contrast, argued that it offered necessary protection to the groups it identified against the effects of others’ incitement of hatred against them.  In this talk, I want to examine the various normative grounds that could be offered for justifying the limits placed on the freedom of expression by this Act.   The classic defence of freedom of expression is of course that of J S Mill, for whom such expression should only be limited in order to protect others from harm.  In this case, the criminalization of religious and racial hatred would be justified if it caused harm.  But what sort of harm might it cause?  And could such harm be severe enough to justifying limiting freedom of expression?

Venue: RM/E16, Caerleon Campus

Time: 5.30pm

All are very much welcome.  For further details, and/or to confirm that you would like to attend, please contact Gideon Calder in the School of Health and Social Sciences: gideon.calder@newport.ac.uk
