Message for the SU -
Hi all
The week beginning Monday February 16th and running until Sunday 22nd February is the Students' Union RAG (Raising and Giving) Week. After last year's £500 raising debacle we, this year, want to break Newport SU's record RAG week total of £6,039.06 (raised in 1998). To achieve this we're encouraging as many students to get involved in any way possible whether it be a cake sale or getting involved in the SU run to Cardiff. It would be great if you could support us in the Union by passing this information to all students, encouraging them to get involved in this fundraising activity. We'll be producing RAG Week 'Get Involved' leaflets which we can send you.
Thanks for your support.

The National Library of Wales has undertaken the digitisation of the back-numbers of more than 50 journal publications relating to Wales, and is now unveiling Welsh Journal Online as a research tool at http://welshjournals.llgc.org.uk.
Project staff are visiting higher education bodies in Wales throughout February to demonstrate the website to staff and students and to gather user feedback and they'll be visiting Newport on February 13th. The attached flyer will give you more information.
Please take note of the following -
You should at all time ensure that your electronic and hard copy assignment work is secure, such that no other student is able to access it.
Your assignment should never be given to another student to submit on your behalf
Failure to adhere to such security requirements could result in the University initiating collusion and/or disciplinary procedures.
'This "JISC TechDis User Preferences Toolbar" has been designed to provide students and teachers with a simple way of imposing their accessibility preferences onto potentially any web page.
A section of high contrast and pale colour schemes have been provided along with a choice of serif and non-serif font.
The toolbar also offer a handy zoom function that magnifies the page. The colour and font changes do not persist from page to page but it does provide the user with a greater sense of control as they can choose when (and when not) to use their preferred presentation.'
The School of Health and Social Sciences is delighted to announce its fantastic results in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008. The RAE panel looked at the School's Social Work and Social Policy and Administration submission and the results displayed the departments fantastic research pedigree.
The Panel stated after the exercise: "The outputs were found to have a substantial proportion of internationally excellent and internationally recognised quality with some evidence of world-leading quality in respect of the Newport Centre for Counselling Research (NCCR)".

Overall 55% of the research output from the school that has been looked
at by the panel in this exercise is judged to be internationally
excellent or world-leading which is a fantastic reflection of the
research culture that exists within the institute and is in a large
part down to the highly talented and educated academic staff within.
Students within the school also get to benefit from our research as it
progresses and fiurther develops different ideas, perspectives and
understanding of areas for the academics which can then be integrated
into their lectures and passed on.
The School is extremely proud that 85% of the work submitted was
internationally recognised, and that world-leading work is coming out
of the Newport Centre for Counselling Research (NCCR).

This pride is reflected by the reaction of Phil Cole, School Associate
Dean of Research and Enterprise who said: "That there are
internationally recognised researchers in the School -- some of them
producing world-leading work -- is something we can take great pride
in. These results show that the School of Health and Social Sciences
here at the University of Wales, Newport, has a lively and attractive
research environment that benefits our staff and students. We intend to
go forward from here to increase the range of excellent research being
produced, as well as build on those areas that have demonstrated their
strength through the Research Assessment Exercise."
Unfortunately Vida Greaux is not available to take her tutorial tomorrow morning (Tuesday 27th January) so the session has been cancelled.
Either myself or Vida will keep you up to date with any developments.
Apologies for the inconvenience this causes - Regards, Angela
