We asked a group of year one students what advice they'd give to the next cohort of students coming on behind them. This is what they had to say -
"Actually go to the lectures and make your own notes, putting it into your own words, as lecturer's language can become confusing. Don't rely on other people's notes and take notes of in class discussion too as other people's views can also help you learn more. Do more wider reading around the notes - internet, books etc, this will give you a wider understanding - good luck and enjoy."
"Get into the habit of handing in assignments on time"
"Spend 15 minutes after each lecture reflecting and taking notes"
"ENJOY!"
"Don't put stuff off until the very last minute. Plan your studies and plan when you're going to work on your essays. Keep a timetable. Actually do it"
"When the lecturer asks if anyone has any questions ask some. It's OK to do that and they'll be pleased you did."
"Direct tasks are so much easier to do at the time - don't put things off"
"If you need help then ask"
"Use the MLE. There's all kind of stuff there if you look"
"Make use of the library, it's extremely useful. Also forming a study group is really helpful for forthcoming assignments."
"Identify, expand and use your support networks. The process of personal change is often challenging and you may find that the course has an impact on areas of your life which you may not expect. Read the handouts! Most answers to your questions are contained within."
