NTV (Newport Television) is the new Students’ Union television station for Newport Students, by students for students. It’s an online, on-demand television station aiming to provide entertainment and information for students as well as acting as a space where students can showcase their own work or get involved in larger NTV productions.

The station tentatively launched in March 2008 with a small selection of trial programming which can be seen at www.newportunion.com/ntv but we will be re-launching the station with a bang in October! To celebrate this we are inviting ALL students of University of Wales, Newport to enter some films into the NTV Film Festival which will be held the week following Fresher’s Fortnight.

If you are already a budding filmmaker or just fancy giving it a go, throw caution to the wind and enter as we’ll be giving away prizes on the final night to the best films in 4 categories:
1 Animation
2 Documentary
3 Fiction
4 Music Video

As well as this the best film will be awarded the coveted ‘Palme Port’ trophy!

For details on how to enter your films into the NTV Film Festival please see the attachment with this posting.

A forum for topical research open to staff, students and the general public

Andrew Bloodworth
Swansea University

We know some athletes use banned drugs. We know some drugs-using athletes are children and adolescents. Little has been done, however, to explore young elite athletes’ attitudes toward performance-enhancing drugs in any depth. This talk will discuss recent research by the author into precisely this issue, conducted through focus groups around the UK. How willing are young athletes to take banned substances? How do they perceive the boundaries between acceptable and unacceptable substance use? Would they do it if there was a guarantee of not getting caught? The findings are often surprising, and always significant as a snapshot of the way these issues are viewed of by representatives of the next generation of British athletics.

This is the last in this year’s series of research seminars. As usual, the session includes a talk, followed by the opportunity for discussion.  Refreshments will be provided.

Monday 9th June. 5.30pm
Venue: IBJ/A41, Caerleon Campus.
