May 2008 - Posts

Further down this blog - 17th April - you'll find reference to a conference event that students are invited to attend. This is just to say that you'll find further details here and to remind you that we will need to know that you're attending in advance. One other point here is that I'm wondering whether it's going to be possible to access that link from off campus - apologies if not, I'll have to find some other way of getting you the information.

Are you good at getting your point across?

The International law firm Herbert Smith and The Times are launching  an advocacy competition for students. The competition is open to all students, not just to those studying law and the deadline to submit is 27th June. You'll find further details here.

Just a reminder of this evening's open seminar. As usual, the session includes a talk, followed by the opportunity for discussion.  Refreshments will be provided.

Myth and Reality in Forensic Science

Nigel Hodge is a senior lecturer in forensic science at the University of Glamorgan and is also currently active in criminal casework as a freelance consultant forensic scientist. To date, he has investigated more than 1,200 cases including more than 160 cases of homicide or suspicious death.

Forget what you see on TV, the reality of forensic science in the UK is less glamorous, but arguably far more interesting than the TV fantasies. This talk will explain how forensic scientists work within the criminal justice system and will explore the effect of the open market on forensic science provision.

Venue: IBJ/A4, Caerleon Campus Time: 5.30pm

Though all are very much welcome, places are limited.  For further details, and/or to confirm that you would like to attend, please contact Gideon Calder.

Did you enter Higher Education via one of the following vocational routes?

BTEC National Diploma

Any other equivalent level 3 vocational qualification/professional experience
If so, then please read on.

My name is Robert Eden and I am a PhD Student in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham. My research is looking into the student experience of higher education through the eyes of people who have entered with vocational qualifications, looking at various factors. For example:

* The choices that you have made after compulsory schooling and the choice to go to university and a particular institution and course.

* What was the transition to Higher Education like for you?

* What support have you received from your friends and family and your institution?

My aim would be to conduct one interview with each participant, and possibly a follow up interview at a later date. The interviews would last approximately half an hour to 45minutes. Your responses would of course remain completely anonymous. I would be extremely grateful if you could spare me some of your valuable time to assist me with my research. Interviews would be scheduled at your convenience.

Please feel free to contact me if you are interested on REE696@bham.ac.uk

Many thanks and best wishes for your studies.

The Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning and School of Health and Social Sciences are jointly holding a conference looking at how demographic change and an increasingly older population can be adequately provided for in the near future. It takes place on May 22nd, it's free, and you'll find more details attached to this posting.

The Internet's a brilliant resource, but can you always trust it? How can you tell facts from opinion? With this posting you'll find the "Evaluating Internet Resources Guide" written by Alison Harding - Accuracy, Credibility, Currency, Validity - it's all there and it's essential reading. Mind you, how do you know you can trust me when I say that?
