Hard to know whether this is all that useful, given the availability of the RoboBraille service (see further down this blog) but if you hi-light a block of text in Word, and then press the Windows key and "s" you'll hear the text being read out to you. You can also change the voice to male or female, fast or slow and a few more extras if you go into “my computer”  control panel and then the sounds speeches and audio devices. Don't know what they key combination is on a Mac - there's certainly not going to be a Windows key!
