Two photography students work as interns for Val Williams and Daniel Meadows

Photographer Daniel Meadows and writer and curator Val Williams are collaborating on a project for a forthcoming book and exhibition based on the archive of Daniel Meadows.

Our students, Denise Fotheringham BA (Hons) Documentary Photography, and Kelly Bishop BA (Hons) Photographic Art, are helping to organise and coordinate the archive in preparation for the book and also for acquisition by Birmingham Central Library.

The book will be a part of a series of publications Val Williams has worked on with mid to late term career photographers. Previous titles have included “Martin Parr”, published by Phaidon Books and “Anna Fox Photographs 1983 – 2007” published by Photoworks.

Daniel Meadows

Daniel, who was a tutor on Documentary Photography from 1982 to 1994, is recognised as one of the prime movers of the new documentary movement of the 1970’s in Britain. A movement which included people like Martin Parr, Tony Ray Jones, Homer Sykes to name a few. In addition to being a highly regarded photographer Daniel Meadows is also a teacher, writer, filmmaker and in 2002 won a BAFTA Cymru for his digital storytelling work for the BBC. http://www.photobus.co.uk/index.php?id=1

Val Williams

Professor Val Williams is Director of the University of the Arts London Research Centre for Photography and the Archive. She is a writer and curator and has curated exhibitions for the Barbican Art Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, The National Museum of Photography and the British Council. From 1999 – 2002 she was Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Hasselblad Centre in Sweden. Her previous publications include ‘The Other Observers (1986), ‘Illuminations’ (1995), ‘Who’s Looking at the Family’ (1994), ‘The Dead’ (1995), ‘New Natural History’ (1999), ‘Look At Me’ (1998), ‘Martin Parr’ (2002) , ‘How We Are’ (2007) and ‘Anna Fox’ (2007). http://www.arts.ac.uk/15413.htm
