The subject of football

For my second independent lesson, I decided to use the topic of football for my entry 2 reading class as it was an example of informative text. I took in newspaper clippings showing a summary of the Premier League matches. I thought that using material that the students may have come across in everyday life would help them relate to the lesson.

I used a short report from the internet and used it on the interactive board. As a class, we discussed the format and style of the text and each student read the part of the report allowed. We also discussed the content, looking at the vocabulary used. The students found this interesting, because some students read the sports results but have not understood some technical terms.

I placed the students into pairs, and they had a table with a pack of laminated cards. I instructed my students to place the football teams in alphabetical order on the table. As a group, I gave an example and the students continued independently. They enjoyed the group work, so I gave them a set of questions linked to the newspaper article and they continued to work in pairs to read and answer the questions.

As a group, we discussed the answers.  I really enjoyed using ‘real’ materials and based on the success of the lesson, I will continue to do so. I feel that the students understood the lesson and could relate to the subjects covered.

I feel that my confidence is growing and I am building a rapport with my students and the staff at Coleg Glan Hafren.
